In ancient Greece, the witch Qetsiyah encountered a male siren who gifted her with his tear after saving him. In the early 20th century, Aria met and became friends with a young siren who later would turn out to be the mother of Jayne Rutledge. At some point the sirens became almost extinct with only a few remaining.
Sirens are shown to have other abilities besides their longevity and vocal power. They are also able to create illusions and shapeshift. They do not appear to feed on humans like vampires or other supernatural creatures. They are not immortal but age much slower then humans.
Sirens are able to produce tears that can heal any mortal wound. It's unknown if every siren has this power, as it is only been mentioned as a power within Jayne's bloodline.
They can also control and manipulate every type of water.
In Greek mythology, the Sirens were dangerous yet beautiful creatures, portrayed as femme fatales who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. Roman poets placed them on some small islands called Sirenum scopuli. Although they lured mariners, the Greeks did not portray the Sirens as sea deities. Roman writers linked the Sirens more closely to the sea. The Sirens were called the Muses of the lower world. Sirens were believed to combine women and birds in various ways. In early Greek art, Sirens were represented as birds with large women's heads, bird feathers and scaly feet. Later, they were represented as female figures with the legs of birds, with or without wings, playing a variety of musical instruments, especially harps. Sirens continued to be used as a symbol for the dangerous temptation embodied by women regularly throughout Christian art of the medieval era. The term "siren song" refers to an appeal that is hard to resist but that, if heeded, will lead to a bad conclusion.
